Beat the heat with a weekend fishing trip

Continued summer heat was forecast this weekend for southern and southeastern New Mexico. A weekend trip to favored fishing spots could be a nice way to cool off, according to angling information from the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.

Fishing at Elephant Butte Lake near Truth or Consequences for bass was good using drop-shot rigs and red-and-white Bomber lures. Fishing for white bass was good using pink Wally Diver lures, Flicker Shad lures and vertical-jigging Kastmaster lures.

Fishing for walleye was good using Wally Diver lures, chartreuse grubs and silver spinners. Fishing for striper was fair with white slab spoons and silver Kastmaster lures.

Fishing for crappie was very good using live minnows near the Dam Site Marina. Fishing for catfish was good using live minnows and shrimp.

Along with Rio Grande River the stream flow below Elephant Butte Dam was 2,002 cubic feet per second (cfs) on Tuesday, per the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. Fishing for catfish was good using shad near Hatch.

In the Ruidoso area, Alto Lake and Bonito Lake are closed indefinitely due extensive damage caused by summer fires.

Around Carlsbad, fishing for catfish was fair to good at Bataan Lake using cut bait and worms.

Fishing for catfish was fair using night crawler worms at Carlsbad Municipal Lake.

In Roswell, fishing for catfish was good at Spring River Pond using shrimp bait.

Along the Pecos River below Fort Sumner, the stream flow was 113 cfs Monday morning.

Fishing for catfish was good using chicken breasts and hot dogs.
