The Artesia Police Department hosted a retirement ceremony for Cmdr. Ramon “Guy” Chavarria Friday afternoon at the Artesia Center with dozens of law enforcement officials attending from throughout the region, including Eddy County Sheriff Scott London and Artesia Municipal Judge Richard Martinez, both of whom are former APD officers. Several of the ceremony’s guests had a story to share.
“I joined the Artesia Police Department in 1982. I was still a newbie,” Martinez said. “We used to play jokes on the midnight shift. I was on duty, Shane Baker was the sergeant on duty, and our acting lieutenant was Guy Chavarria. At about 4 ‘o clock in the morning, we decided to pull a joke on one of our detention officers, Brad Hughes. I ran back to the house and picked up a pair of pantyhose, and met Shane back on Main Street, and he had these huge bags of shredded paper. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
