The Artesia Police Department remains on scene in the parking lot of Walmart this evening as investigations continue into a shooting incident that left one male individual injured.

According to Cmdr. Lindell Smith of the APD, a male subject was shot once in the upper extremity around 5:45 p.m. today in the parking lot. The man was treated at the scene by Artesia EMS before being airlifted to an area hospital. He is expected to survive.

Smith says evidence is continuing to be gathered, along with descriptions of the shooter from witnesses at the scene. It is not currently clear what led to the incident.

Walmart is and will remain open. Shoppers are urged to avoid the designated crime scene in the center of the lot.

Additional information will be published as it becomes available.
