Artesia felon pleads guilty to federal firearms charges

Martin O. Madrid, 29, of Artesia, pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court in Las Cruces to violating the federal firearms laws by unlawfully possessing firearms and ammunition.

Madrid entered the guilty plea without the benefit of a plea agreement.

Madrid, whose prior criminal history includes felony convictions for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, child abuse, battery against a household member, extortion, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, is being prosecuted as part of a federal anti-violence initiative that targets violent, repeat offenders for federal prosecution.

Madrid was arrested May 4 on charges of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition on April 18 in Eddy County. According to the complaint, law enforcement officers responded to a missing person call for service on April 18. During the search for the missing person, who was found in the company of Madrid, officers arrested Madrid on an outstanding arrest warrant. Officers seized a loaded firearm and ammunition from Madrid incident to his arrest.

He was indicted July 18. At sentencing, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. He remains in custody pending a sentencing hearing which has yet to be scheduled.

This case was investigated by the Las Cruces office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office.
