Above, CPT(P) Pedro N. “Pete” Martinez III gazes at photographs of local veterans, past and present, this afternoon during the opening of the Artesia Historical Museum and Art Center’s “Honoring Artesia’s Veterans” exhibit. Martinez was the keynote speaker at this morning’s Veterans’ Day Celebration in Baish Veterans’ Park. “It’s been very honorable serving this country the last 20 years, and I will stay in as long as I can,” Martinez told the Daily Press. A 1998 graduate of Artesia High School, Martinez is stationed in Fort Sill, Ada and Ardmore, Okla. The museum’s exhibit will remain on display through Nov. 25. Below, Artesia Public Schools’ third-graders perform a medley or patriotic songs in honor of local veterans during this morning’s Veterans’ Day Celebration in Baish Veterans’ Park. A large crowd of Artesians braved the chilly weather to participate in the ceremony, which included performances by the Artesia High School band and a playing of “Taps” by MacKenna Smoot.
