An Artesia man was arrested Sunday at Artesia General Hospital on charges of possession and concealing identity.

Artesia Police Department officers were dispatched around 4 a.m. Sunday to Artesia General Hospital in reference to an unwanted subject. A man emitting an odor of marijuana had been asked to leave the emergency room waiting room but had not done so.

Officers made contact with the man, who stated he did not have identification but provided police with a name he proceeded to write differently on a criminal trespass warning form issued by AGH.

Police also noted the odor of marijuana and were given permission to search the man’s backpack, in which they found multiple items of drug paraphernalia. While attempting to place him under arrest for possession of the items, they were unable to confirm the name given through dispatch.

During a search of the man’s person, officers located a folded paper containing a crystal substance, as well as a pill bottle containing marijuana.

Upon arrival at the Artesia Detention Center, the male finally gave police his correct name – Edwin Luna, 23, of Artesia – and stated he had concealed his identity due to outstanding warrants.

He was subsequently charged with forgery, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and concealing identity.

Luna was scheduled this week for a Feb. 14 preliminary examination on the above charges in Artesia Magistrate Court, and was also found guilty of failure to pay fines with a sentence of nine days in the Eddy County Detention Center.
