An Artesia man was killed Friday afternoon in a fatal accident on U.S. 285.

New Mexico State Police responded just after 1 p.m. Friday to the scene near mile marker 89 on U.S. 285 north of Artesia.

Initial investigation revealed a vehicle driven by Bobby Madron, 73, of Artesia, was southbound on the highway when it exited the roadway and overturned several times along the southbound shoulder.

Madron sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger, 72-year-old Joyce Dehnen of Artesia, also sustained injuries in the wreck and was transported to Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. ENMMC declined Saturday evening to provide the Daily Press with a condition update for Dehnen.

The NMSP is continuing to investigate the accident.
