The public is being warned about a scam concerning fundraising for the Artesia Public Schools.

The scammers, claiming to be representatives of a non-existent company called Mike’s Athletic Sports of Arlington, Texas, have contacted local companies to solicit funds, stating they are fundraising on behalf of the APS. APS officials have stated any fundraising conducted on behalf of the schools will be preceded by prior contact from the schools or will include a personalized letter from the schools.

The contact information provided by the scammers to intended victims is: Mike Whiteman, Mike’s Athletic Sports, 1523 Rambler Road, Arlington, TX, 76014, mikesathleticsports@yahoo.com.

“There are all kinds of people in the world that will even take advantage of kids’ team sports to gain personally,” said Cmdr. Lindell Smith of the Artesia Police Department. “If a person is not sure about someone asking for donations associated with a local sports team and they wish to donate, do so directly to the parent organization.”

Any business or individual receiving communication from the above is warned not to send money and asked to contact the APD at 746-5000.
