An Aztec man was charged with DWI after causing a pair of accidents last Tuesday night on U.S. 285 North.

According to the New Mexico State Police, Justin Harris of Aztec was traveling south on U.S. 285 around 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, in a white Dodge pickup, en route from Aztec to Carlsbad, when he rear-ended a small Nissan SUV near the Compress Road intersection.

A pickup equipped with a flatbed, occupied by a witness, stopped to render aid and was also struck by Harris.

The driver of the Nissan was transported from the scene by EMS to Artesia General Hospital with minor injuries and was later released. The driver of the second vehicle struck was not injured.

Prior to the accidents, the Regional Emergency Dispatch Authority (REDA) had received a report of a white Dodge pickup driving erratically. Witnesses also told NMSP officers they had observed the pickup driven by Harris swerving across the roadway before striking the Nissan.

Harris was transported from the scene to AGH for treatment of injuries sustained in the wrecks and was airlifted to Lubbock, Texas, Wednesday for further treatment. He has been charged with DWI (second offense), reckless driving, and open container.
