Matt and Sarah Walker of Boomerang BBQ, Wolfforth, Texas, display their prize after taking the Whole Hog this weekend at the Seventh Annual Devon Energy Smokin’ on the Pecos New Mexico State BBQ Championship. Boomerang took the Grand Championship on Day One of the two-day competition Saturday, then earned the Reserve Champion title Sunday for a two-day points total of 1,419.417. They were presented with a custom cutting board and a “preferred Golden Ticket” to the World Food Championships in November in Orange Beach, Ala. The ticket, purchased by Smokin’ on the Pecos, provides the team with up t $1,000 in travel reimbursements and their $300 entry fee. Coming in second overall amongst teams that competed on both days of SOTP was Rio Valley Meat BBQ, followed by The American Dream BBQ Team. Photos of winners from Sunday’s professional barbecue competition will be published in Wednesday’s Daily Press.
