The Bulldog soccer team picked up its first win of the season Tuesday on the road in decisive fashion, blanking the Warriors of Ruidoso by a final of 5-0.

After coming up one goal short of Belen in their opener Aug. 20 and two short of Class 6A Hobbs last week, the victory was a welcome one for the boys in orange.

“I’m happy that we got a win,” head coach Phillip Jowers said today. “More than anything, I’m happy that they understand that if you do work hard and you keep at it, you’ll eventually succeed. Sometimes it just takes time.”

The ‘Dogs took a 2-0 lead over the Warriors in at the half in Ruidoso and increased their offensive chances in the final 40 minutes to tack on three more goals.

Alex Ruiz and Chris Reyes finished with two apiece on the night and Jake Trejo one.

“We definitely had more offensive opportunities last night,” said Jowers. “The score could have been much higher, but there were a couple of goals we didn’t score that weren’t for a lack of opportunity. We just need to work on finishing whenever we do have those opportunities.”

While buoyed by the win that places them at 1-2 on the year, Jowers will be looking for his team to stay on the offensive Thursday when they host Gadsden at 6 p.m. at the Mack Chase Athletic Complex.

“I don’t want them to be complacent,” said the coach. “We have a lot of games left to play. We’ve never seen Gadsden, so we really don’t know what to expect. We’re just going to keep doing what we’ve been doing as far as playing our style of play, look ahead to just that one game, and try to give ourselves more opportunities offensively.

“But the boys played really well last night, and we’re just looking forward to the next couple of games because they’ll be a little more challenging.”
