It was a rollercoaster weekend for the Runnin’ ‘Dogs basketball team at the Ram Shootout in Portales.
Returning to Goober Gulch Friday after topping Class 3A sixth-ranked Portales there Jan. 4, 70-63, the boys in orange made short work of the West Las Vegas Dons, 83-54, before coming up short of the 3A eighth-ranked Pojoaque Elks Saturday, 63-52.
But despite the Shootout-ending loss, the Bulldogs put forth a solid effort against some top 3A talent and will build on that in the coming week as they prepare to continue their 10-game road trip.
“If you count our game against Portales Tuesday, we had three trips to Portales in five days, and I thought they were all pretty good trips,” Bulldog head coach Ike Montoya said Saturday from the road. “We went 2-1 against some very good-quality 3A teams, and considering we’re in the middle of our big swing on the road, we learned some more lessons about being mentally prepared every time you go out and play somebody at their place. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
