A Carlsbad woman who swallowed a pen while in police custody tacked on additional charges last week when she attempted to escape from the hospital.

Artesia Police Department officers were in the process of transporting Miriam McClane, 36, of Carlsbad, to the Artesia General Hospital emergency room around 11:40 a.m. March 6 after McClane swallowed an ink pen while incarcerated in the Artesia Detention Center.

McClane’s handcuffs and shackles were removed for treatment, and after being escorted back to her hospital room by AGH staff, she bolted out an open door and across the parking lot.

Officers spotted McClane running southbound through the AGH lot, eventually ducking behind a parked Chevrolet Tahoe. The vehicle alarm was activated, and officers could see McClane attempting to gain entry to the vehicle.

According to the report, as the officer approached, McClane pulled her arm back as if to strike. A hospital employee was able to grab her arm and restrain her until the officer could subdue her.

McClane was subsequently charged with escape from jail, attempted unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer. She is scheduled for preliminary investigation April 11 in Artesia Magistrate Court.

McClane was charged Feb. 19 with shoplifting (over $250 but less than $500) and Feb. 6 with shoplifting ($250 or less) and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She is scheduled for an 8 a.m. March 20 preliminary examination in Carlsbad Magistrate Court on the Feb. 19 charge and a 9 a.m. April 11 prelim in CMC on the Feb. 6 charges.
