Representatives from the University of New Mexico will host a seminar titled “How to Pay for College” for students of all high-school grade levels – as well as their parents – at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, in the Central Valley Electric Cooperative Community Room, 1505 N. 13th St.
The event is sponsored by the Chase Foundation, the Artesia High School guidance department, and UNM; however, the presentation is not solely for students interested in UNM. All students and parents, regardless of college preferences, are encouraged to attend.
“The point of this is to provide earlier education for the parents whose children are planning on attending college,” said Jennifer Urban, education coordinator at the Chase Foundation. “Even though scholarships are plentiful in this area, sometimes it’s harder for students to find enough scholarships to pay for everything, especially if the student is attending college out of the state.
“This will educate students and parents on how to finance what scholarships don’t cover.”
The talking points will include filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the difference between loans, grants and scholarships, attending college in-state as opposed to out-of-state, two-year schools versus four-year schools and how the lottery scholarship works at both, dual credits and how they will apply to college, and transferring to different colleges. Following the presentation, there will be time to ask the UNM representatives questions.
“This is a great opportunity for students and their parents to get some face-to-face time with representatives,” said Urban. “[The representatives] are really energetic and will get them excited for college.”
