A police pursuit that originated Tuesday afternoon in Chaves County made its way into Artesia, placing a trio of local schools into a brief lockdown.

Artesia Police Department officers responded to the pursuit call around 3 p.m. Tuesday and were monitoring the Richey Avenue area.

A portion of Richey was blocked to ensure school zone safety, and Park Junior High School, Yucca Elementary School and Roselawn Elementary School were placed on lockdown from 3:16-3:25 p.m.

The individual operating the vehicle in question abandoned it and was not apprehended. The vehicle was seized and towed back to Chaves County.

APD Cmdr. Lindell Smith says there is no evidence to indicate the incident posed or continues to pose a danger to the public.
