‘I have had more phone calls on this particular issue than any other’

Artesia City Councilors and officials expressed a variety of mixed opinions, Tuesday, about the proposed rental ordinance in preparation for next week’s public input meeting.
If approved, the new ordinance would require rental property owners to register their properties with the city and enable the city to ensure that all rental properties are compliant with health and safety standards.
Several councilors, primarily relaying the views of their constituents, expressed concerns about the ordinance.
“I’ve had a few phone calls from people who are worried,” Councilor Manuel Barragan said. “One renter said they’ve been told if the city enforces this, their rent is going to go up.” … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
