The second-degree murder trial of Osmond O. Viernes, 37, of Artesia, will conclude today after a week of testimony from state and defense witnesses. Viernes, who has been in custody at Eddy County Detention Center for more than two years, was charged with murder after a fistfight resulted in the shooting death of Juan Sifuentes, also of Artesia.
“The reason we’re here today is because Juan Sifuentes went to a party, and was shot to death by Osmond Viernes,” State’s attorney Rob Perozynski began. The defendant was at the party, and had no knowledge that Sifuentes would be coming before Osmond’s brother, Jerry Viernes, called Juan and his brother, Alfonso Sifuentes, and asked them to come over. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
