ARTESIA — The Eddy County Commission will hold a public hearing Thursday on its proposed Hold Harmless Gross Receipts Tax (GRT) increase.
The state has authorized counties and municipalities to increase GRT rates on all sales with the exception of medication and groceries in 1/8-of-1-percent increments to cover financial losses caused by the state; the county’s proposal to take the full 3/8 of 1 percent has met opposition from citizens and other area government officials who consider the move excessive and oppose the fact the funds would be earmarked for county use rather than use within the cities from which they are gleaned. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
