With the annual Eddy County War football game between Artesia and Carlsbad on the horizon, the minds of both the Bulldog and Caveman fans in attendance at Tuesday’s soccer game at the Mack Chase Athletic Complex were in full rivalry mode.

Adding to the tension was the fact the ‘Dogs had topped Class 5A Carlsbad 1-0 in the teams’ first meeting Sept. 6 on the road, adding revenge to the mix for the boys in blue. And with a sizable and vocal crowd in the stands and a physical battle on the field, the result was an action-packed match that took the full 80 minutes to decide.

When all was said and done, it was the Bulldogs with their fists in the air as the final whistle sounded, and by way of a 3-2 victory, Artesia completed a season sweep of their county rivals while improving to 6-4 on the year.

The early goings of Tuesday’s contest played out predominantly at midfield, with scoring opportunities coming at a premium.
