SANTA FE — Eight youth from the Eddy County 4-H program visited Santa Fe Feb. 4 to celebrate 4-H Day at the Roundhouse.

Starting the day in the Rotunda with greetings from the New Mexico State 4-H Leadership Team, the president of New Mexico State University, and the Secretary of Agriculture, the 4-Hers were able to learn the importance the land-grand university system has when it comes to legislation for the state, particularly educational programs such as 4-H.

4-H members met with Eddy County legislators and thanked them for supporting the program in the county. Each youth shared with the legislators a different skill they are developing as a result of their involvement in the 4-H program, skills such as confidence, record keeping, public speaking, parliamentary procedure, raising livestock, leadership, and more.

“Legislators were so kind to take time out of their busy day to listen to our youth and share with them their work in the political field,” said Charly Fisher, family and consumer science agent with the Eddy County Cooperative Extension Service.

4-H is a youth development program that offers non-formal education and provides youth with opportunities to learn skills, gain knowledge, and serve their communities. Education is the foundation of 4-H programming through its direct tie to state landgrant universities.

NMSU houses the 4-H program in New Mexico. For more information, contact the Eddy County Cooperative Extension Service at 575-887-6595.
