It was announced at Tuesday night’s city council meeting the New Mexico Environmental Improvement board will hold a hearing from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 31. to discuss proposed legislation to severely cut industrial greenhouse emissions in New Mexico.
Hearings were initially scheduled in Carlsbad and Hobbs but after the city and concerned citizens contacted the board requesting a hearing in Artesia the board acquiesced.
“We really need to go … (and) remind ourselves of what (the oil and gas) industry does for our part of the state,” said Councilman J.B. Smith at the meeting.
He said the proposed legislation, if passed, will in all probability move jobs out of the state.
