The New Mexico Restaurant Association (NMRA) and the National Restaurant Association’s ServSafe Food Handler Program are offering solutions for New Mexico restaurateurs to comply with recent Food Safety Requirements enacted by the New Mexico Environment Department.

Restaurant industry employees in the state will need to be in compliance with the law by March 1, 2017.

The regulations require each location (or permit holder) to have a Certified Food Safety Manager on staff, and that each employee who comes in contact with food have a Food Handler Permit.

Two classes are slated for next month at ENMU-Roswell. A Food Handler Card class will be held from 2-5 p.m. June 7 and a ServSafe Certification class for managers from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. June 8.

Those in need of certification may register online and view class costs at nmrestaurants.org. The ServSafe Food Handler Program and Certified Manager Program are fully compliant with the State of New Mexico requirements. The Food Handler class offers both online and classroom training formats, ensuring the same food principles are delivered consistently.

The NMRA’s Certified Manager Program is offered in person with a certified proctor. This program can streamline the food safety training process at the employee level, saving operators both time and money. Food handlers affected by the law must provide a copy of their Food Handler Card to their employers, who are required to maintain files to submit during the health inspection process.

The online Food Handler training and assessment is fast, affordable, and can be taken anywhere Internet access is available. Users may re-take the exam at no additional charge for up to 60 days from their first login. The classroom-style print format option accommodates groups of employees at one time. A ServSafe Food Handler Instructor guides employees through the training and administers a multiple-choice assessment.
