Four members of the 2017-18 Bulldog basketball team were named All-District selections this season, with one of those also added to the South All-Star roster.

Senior Joe Willingham was named MVP of District 4-AAAAA this year and also got a nod from the Class 5A-6A North-South All-Stars selection committee.

Frequently the loftiest player on the court, Willingham was a force to be reckoned with under the basket for the Runnin’ ‘Dogs, averaging more than 10 points, around eight rebounds, and three blocks per game.

Named as South All-Star alternates were seniors Taylor Null and Chaney Hardt, both of whom also made the All-District First Team.

Hardt delivered solid guard play for the ‘Dogs this season, an equal threat to shoot from the perimeter or beyond the arc and to drive the lane. He averaged 10 points and one steal per game.

Null was Artesia’s other muscle in the paint, crashing the boards and taking charges on defense, and cleaning up under the hoop on the offensive end or shooting accurate jumpers from short range. He averaged eight points, seven rebounds, one steal, and one charge taken per game.

Named to the All-District Second Team was junior point Kale Mauritsen, a quick-handed dribbler who also kept defenses honest with his ability to either pull up or barrel in for a shot off the glass. Mauritsen finished with a six-point and one-steal per-game average.

The full North-South All-Star rosters have yet to be posted by the New Mexico High School Coaches’ Association but will be published once they are, and All-State selections are expected to be released in the coming days.

The Bulldog basketball team held its end-of-season banquet at 6 p.m. Monday at the Artesia Public Schools Administration Building.
