After holding the Class 5A 10th-ranked Cavegirls to a single goal in the first half of play Tuesday on the road, a breakdown in communication by the Lady Bulldog soccer team opened the floodgates in the latter minutes of the second half.

The result was a 5-0 loss for the Artesia girls that drops the team’s record to 7-8 on the season. But with a trio of key starters out and several underclassmen being forced to step up to fill the void, head coach Tim Trentham wasn’t displeased with the overall performance.

“We did a good job of holding them to one goal in the first half, and that goal came pretty late in the half,” Trentham said today. “We just spent the majority of the time on our own half of the field again, and any time we’d get the ball out, we just weren’t making connections with our passing.

“It seemed like every time one of our players touched the ball, it was just a scramble. We weren’t thinking about developing any kind of attack through the whole first half, and I don’t think we got a single shot off.” … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
