Larry Evans

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, April 29, at Trinity Temple Assembly of God for Larry Evans.

Larry was born June 19, 1933, in Snyder, Texas, to B.F. Evans and Laura Page Evans Wells. The family moved to the Weed, N.M., area in 1938 and lived in and around there for most of his young years. Larry lived with, and worked for, Ross and Mable Hooten for two years at Mayhill.

His school years were, for the most part, at Weed and Cloudcroft, where he received a high-school education. Larry drove a delivery truck for Burgetts Floral for three years. He also worked in the logwoods and on road jobs for a while.

In 1953, he married Earlene Black, and the couple later moved to Grants, where he worked in the uranium mines for 10 years. They moved to Grayson, La., and were there for 30 years as he worked as a mechanic and, for a short time, in the oilfield.

Larry and Earlene, along with grandson David Hurst, moved back to Hope in 1999.

Larry was a member of Trinity Temple Assembly of God and spent many hours playing his guitar and singing at rest homes for the elderly. He fondly remembers his mother singing old songs as she worked at home, caring for her children.

It was Larry’s request to be cremated and his ashes placed by his mother in the Weed, N.M., cemetery.

Survivors include children Perry Earl Evans and wife Debbie of Artesia and Rita Yvonne Evans and her three sons of Columbia, La.; sister Happy Doris Bell and husband Dalton of Artesia; brothers Gilbert Evans and wife Penny of Tularosa and Mickey Evans and wife Carolyn of Poolville, Texas; and sisters Sally Stade and husband Robert of Carlsbad and Jane E. Lewis and husband Paul of Smyer, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Earlene Evans, on June 19, 2003; his parents; one son, David Orville Evans; one grandson, Larry Glenn Evans; and a brother, Leon Evans.

Arrangements are under the direction of Terpening & Son Mortuary. Condolences may be expressed online at www.artesiafunerals.com.
