Lifeline Children’s Services, a Christian adoption agency, and Placed by Grace, an adoption ministry of Harvest Fellowship in Artesia, are inviting women of Artesia who have placed their birth children in adoptive homes to celebrate Mother’s Day with a Birth Mothers’ Brunch.

According to Arlas Blackwell, director of New Mexico’s division of Lifeline Children’s Services, these women grieve every year on Mother’s Day, and the stigma that comes with adoption should be dismissed.

“We want them to know they are loved, because we can’t even begin to imagine what they have gone through,” said Blackwell. “This is just a drop in the bucket for what we can do for them.”

So far, two women have signed up to attend the brunch, and Blackwell is hoping for eight more.

“We’re praying for 10 women to attend,” said Blackwell. “We know there are women out there who have chosen to place their child in an adoptive home, and we want to provide them a support group.”

Each birth mother who attends the brunch will receive a gift basket full of goodies, including gift certificates for restaurants and salons, hair care products, jewelry, and coloring books.

The agencies hosting the event are also still seeking sponsors for gift baskets. The cost of sponsoring a complete basket is $150, with all costs going toward the gifts. According to Blackwell, it’s also possible to sponsor portions of baskets, and there will be cards recognizing each sponsor inside the baskets.

The brunch will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at Harvest Fellowship, 404 W. Richey Ave.

“We would like to offer continuing support if they need it,” said Blackwell. “And if not, they can come back to next year’s brunch and it will continue to grow every year.”

If interested in attending or donating to the brunch, contact Blackwell at 513-8743.
