The Artesia Historical Museum & Art Center Foundation held our 14th Annual Living Treasures awards presentation at 2 p.m.Sunday to honor Tommy Sanders and Lowell Irby.
The Artesia Historical Museum & Art Center Foundation began the Living Treasures program in 1998 as a way to recognize members of our community who have made a difference. One man and one woman are chosen by foundation members each year and are honored with an awards ceremony and reception for their family and friends.
Sanders’ family came to Artesia in 1942, and she grew up right next door to the museum house. Her parents were Tom and Myrtle “Dutch” Franklin. Sanders has always been a woman of many talents — she made baked goods for the public during the years her children were small. After her children were a little older, she attended beauty school and worked in a friend’s beauty shop for several years. She later opened her own beauty shop on First Street and named it Jaynie’s after one of her daughters.
