
Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at Twin Oaks Memorial Park for Mary Catherine “Meme” McGonagill of Artesia.
McGonagill, 86, passed away Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, at Landsun Health Services in Carlsbad.
Gary Smith will officiate the services. Pallbearers will be Ray Martin, Timothy Martin, Anthony Martin, Jim Ellett, Bill Runyan and Richard Martin. Honorary pallbearers are James Arnold, Michael McGonagill, Nicholas Thompson, Gary Smith and Jim Runyan.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Terpening & Son Mortuary.
Mary was born Nov. 3, 1930, in Carlsbad to Irvin Lock and Gertrude (Runyan) Martin. She was a lifelong Artesia resident.
On July 19, 1964, she married Alex Edwin McGonagill in Artesia.
Mary graduated from Loretta High and Academy School in El Paso, Texas, in 1948. She was an elementary school teacher for one year before becoming a homemaker. She was a member of the Garden Club and Homemakers Club, and a group and prayer circle leader at her church. She enjoyed sightseeing, reading and drawing.
Survivors include nephews Ray Martin and wife Karen of Hope, who were her caretakers, Richard Martin and Michael McGonagill; nieces Pamela Weeden-Sturdy and Marilyn McGonagill; 10 great-nieces and nephews, including Timothy Martin, whom she thought of as a grandson; and six great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex McGonagill, on March 19, 1991; her parents; brother Irvin Richard Martin; sister Meredith Martin-Weeden; and nieces Bonnie Duggar.
