A Roswell man was killed Monday after rear-ended a commercial motor vehicle on U.S. 285.

New Mexico State Police were dispatched around 6:30 a.m. Monday to the area of mile marker 90 on U.S. 285 south of Roswell.

Initial investigation revealed a 2000 Nissan, driven by Alejandro Chavez, 34, of Roswell, was travelling south at a high rate of speed behind a southbound 2003 Peterbilt commercial vehicle. For unknown reasons, the Nissan rear-ended the truck.

Chavez sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the CMV was uninjured.

The NMSP say driver inattention appears to be the cause of the accident. Alcohol does not appear to have been involved. Seatbelts were not properly utilized.
