A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at San Jose Catholic Church in Carlsbad for Socorro Hernandez of Carlsbad.

Hernandez, 89, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018, at Landsun HSC in Carlsbad.

Fr. Martin Cordero will officiate the services, with interment to follow at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery in Carlsbad.

Visitation will be held from 1-5 p.m. today at West Funeral Home in Carlsbad, followed by a vigil at 7 p.m. at San Jose Catholic Church.

Socorro was born Feb. 6, 1928, in Shafter, Texas, to Juan and Carmen (Gonzalez) Molinar.
On July 10, 1943, she married Isaac Hernandez.

Socorro joined her family in moving to Loving while Isaac was serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. After serving his country, Isaac and Socorro lived in California and Arizona before making Carlsbad their permanent home.

Socorro worked in dietary at Saint Francis Hospital for 18 years before her retirement. She was a longtime member of the San Jose Catholic Church and continued as an active member of the Catholic Daughters.

Socorro loved socializing and enjoyed arts and crafts, walking, and water aerobics with her friends. She loved her family and grandkids. She was a joy to everyone who knew her.

Survivors include daughters Mary Sue Salmon of Albuquerque, Emma Biscaino and husband Leon of Cameron Park, Calif., Judy Carter and husband Mitch of Carlsbad, and Theresa Thompson of Newport Beach, Calif.; sons Ben Hernandez and wife Toni of Artesia, and Eddy Hernandez and wife Darlene of Carlsbad; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Isaac P. Hernandez; brother AJ Molinar; sister Sulema Molinar; and grandson Cory Martin Hernandez.

Arrangements are under the direction of West Funeral Home of Carlsbad.
