“I don’t think you meant to kill him,” said Detective Alan Griffith in his interview with Jess Carpenter, 28, of Artesia, on the morning of May 21, 2011. “But that’s what happened.”

Griffith, the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office Chief of Detectives, questioned Carpenter in reference to the 2011 shooting death of Carpenter’s friend, Joe Darras.
