The Roswell Police Department will be the site of a Gun Buyback organized by New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence, a nonprofit and nonpartisan group that describes itself as “not anti-gun” but seeking to “reduce firearm injury and death through public health, education, advocacy, and public awareness in order to protect the safety of our families and communities.”

The Gun Buyback will take place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, in the RPD lobby.

Those turning in guns can remain anonymous and will be given grocery, gas or Amazon gift cards in exchange for their unwanted guns. The organizers offer gift cards of $100 for a long gun or basic handgun, $200 for a semi-automatic handgun, and $250 for a semi-automatic rifle. In addition, free gun locks and information on safe gun storage will be available.

New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence has sponsored seven Gun Buyback events to help remove unwanted, working guns from communities without infringing on Second-Amendment rights of citizens, according to Miranda Viscoli, co-president of the organization. During those seven events throughout the state, nearly 400 guns have been collected from local residents wanting to get rid of them.

The guns collected at these events are dismantled and the pieces made into gardening tools.
