The Artesia Arts Council’s annual Summer Movies series heads into its second week Thursday with a showing of the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz.” Above, Arts Council and Ocotillo Performing Arts Center Executive Director Laurie Schotz, center, and Education Director Lauren Austin, right, pose with Mike Alderman of Artesia National Bank, the series’ sponsor, and mascot Kermit the Dog during last week’s screening. Movies begin at 8 p.m. each Thursday in Heritage Walkway, and the film will be included in each Sunday’s Around Town section in the Daily Press. The show and popcorn are free; guests need only bring a drink and a comfortable chair. This week, attendees are encouraged to come in “Oz” costume. The child age 7-17 voted Best Costume will receive free entry to the Rising Stars Summer Musical’s “The Wizard of Oz: Young Performers’ Edition” four-week camp, set to begin June 20, a $100 value.
