After years of struggling with gopher holes out at Jaycee Park, there is finally a solution!

New synthetic turf fields will be installed at Jaycee Park for the 2020 soccer season. Thanks to very generous private donors, this project is becoming a reality. The private sector once again is teaming up with the City of Artesia to provide such an asset to the community. In the midst of all the chaos and uncertainty, one thing is certain – the Artesia community is blessed.

In the Fall of 2019, after the soccer season was over, a group of parents came together to research and plan for a solution to alleviate the gopher problem at Jaycee Park. After twisted ankles and broken arms, parents have had enough! Something had to be done.

A committee, formed by proactive parents, has engaged Hellas Construction with the financial support of a local non-profit foundation. Hellas was founded in 2003 and has developed to fill a unique need in the marketplace, combining both construction services with sports surfacing.

The founders have remained devoted to a full-service model and recently integrated additional manufacturing capabilities to the portfolio of services. Today, Hellas controls the entire supply chain from the design, construction, manufacturing and installation of sports surfaces, including after-the-sale services for all facilities and clients.

“Hellas Construction is honored to work with such a group that cares about the youth activities in the Artesia community,” said Michelle Kuhns, vice president, Central Region. “The City of Artesia is so lucky to have community groups that are leading the way to improve the quality of life in the city.

“Artesia does things the right way and is always thinking about what is best for the community. Artesia is truly a City of Champions!”

Plans for Jaycee Park involve 13 youth soccer fields and three football fields. The fields will be located inside the walking track and will be fenced. Construction is scheduled to start April 1 and expected completion is Fall 2020.

Rocky Hocker, Jaycee Park Committee chair, and other committee members have been working with the City of Artesia and Hellas in an effort to provide the best design for the needs of community members that utilize Jaycee Park.

“The new synthetic turf fields will ensure that our kids have safe fields to practice and play on,” Hocker said. “We as parents could not go another season seeing the kids and parents struggling with gopher holes. We are the City of Champions, and our kids deserve these fields.”
