A power outage resulted Sunday in the area of North 26th Street after a vehicle collided with a power pole in the area.

Cmdr. Lindell Smith of the Artesia Police Department reports the single-vehicle wreck was reported around 6:15 p.m. after a vehicle struck a power pole, breaking it and subsequently setting fire to a nearby tree.

CVE was notified and work began to restore power to the affected residents and businesses.

According to police reports, the vehicle in question was headed south on 26th Street.

A bicyclist was also traveling south in the passing lane. The vehicle’s driver did not see the bicyclist and attempted to enter the passing lane; when they noticed the cyclist, the driver made a sharp right turn to avoid hitting him, lost control of the vehicle, and struck a nearby power pole.

Police say the bicyclist did not have lights on the bike and was not wearing reflective gear.
