William Edward “Bill Ed” or “Hotch” Bullock passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 27, 2018, at his home in San Antonio, Texas, after having suffered a severe, debilitating stroke in January 2012. His loving wife, Mary Jane, devoted her life to caring for Bill Ed and was at his side at his passing.

Bill Ed was born Aug. 4, 1945, in Artesia to William H. and Lois (Spraggins) Bullock. His mother passed away when Bill was only 4, but his father remarried, and Oleta Ford Bullock became Bill Ed’s stepmother in 1951. Bill and she were very close over the years.

Bill graduated from Artesia High School in 1962 and from college at Eastern New Mexico University thereafter. He was an avid golfer, whom his father lovingly named “Hot Shot” when Bill was a young athlete; the name was shortened to “Hotch” in later years. His nickname stuck with him through competitive high school and college golf and throughout his remaining years, both on the course and off.

His son, Billy Dale, is carrying on the family tradition with 25 years as a golf professional at the San Antonio Country Club. Just before his father’s passing, Billy Dale held his father tight and said warmly, “Dad, there are no bogeys where you are going, only birdies.”

Bill had a successful career in insurance, retiring from Traveler’s Insurance Company in 1998 to spend time with his wife in Ruidoso. In 2006, they moved to San Antonio to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Mary Jane Bullock; daughter Melanie Kaufman and husband Garry of Galveston, Texas; son William Dale Bullock and wife Leah of San Antonio; brothers Van Bullock and wife Colette and Joe Bullock and wife Sheila, both of Las Cruces; and grandchildren Taylor, Carson, Rylan and Kennedy Kaufman, and Jessica Bullock.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Lois Bullock; stepmother Oleta Ford Bullock; and sister and brother-in-law Betti and Robert Hodges.

If the measure of a man’s life is best reflected by whom he marries and their children and grandchildren, then Bill Ed’s life was without a doubt well lived.
