Individuals impersonating Xcel customer agents have called citizens in those areas demanding payment for past-due bills and threatening disconnection of service if payment is not made over the phone. In most cases, the scammers instruct customers to use pre-paid debit cards to remit payment.
“We are reminding customers that we always send a printed disconnect notice in the mail prior to any effort to communicate further about delinquent accounts,” said Wes Reeves, Xcel Energy media relations coordinator. “And we have multiple ways in which payments can be made.”
Reeves says customers receiving suspicious calls should hang up immediately and contact Xcel at 1-800-895-4999 to verify their account status. Customers can also keep track of their accounts and make secure electronic payments by downloading the Xcel Energy app from Apple or Google Play.
