“Solutions arise from the minds of many.”

Newspapers, radio, blogs, Zoom, social media- we have more avenues to communication than ever before. We have evolved from wax sealed letters delivered on horseback to instant delivery of a Facebook post to multiple devices.
In my opinion, there is good and bad to this communication evolution. While I appreciate the timeliness of modern methods, I’m concerned that we are missing an integral part of serving the public. And that is simply meeting face to face.
Understanding issues and concerns are better conveyed in person. Conversations expand, solutions can be created, getting in front of those who have been elected to serve you is vital. And it’s with this desire for more opportunities that has created Minute with the Mayor. I take time to sit at a local coffee shop favorite, Kith+Kin every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. The same day as the City Council meeting, which allows me the opportunity to address any concern brought by Artesians that morning. It’s only an hour starting at 8:30am, but thus far I have found this time well spent. People come and go. Some sit and stay. Many just have a passing comment and feel comfortable to visit briefly, knowing this is what my goal is. To get to know you! Many great discussions have been had. Problems and concerns have been brought to my attention. And I’ve met some people that I probably wouldn’t have crossed paths with on a normal business day.
With January creating scheduling conflicts with both County and City meetings, a City Councilman has stepped up to fill my absence. I appreciate Jared Moreau who represents District 2 in Artesia. He actually did a better job than me, staying an additional hour!
Artesia has a City Council that genuinely cares about this town it’s people. We are fortunate to enjoy each other, and it is a very cohesive group of elected individuals. If you are looking to catch the ear of City leadership, know we are making the effort to meet you as well. We are better together, and solutions arise from the minds of many. This town is not ran by a small group of Councilmen, we are simply the vessels that focus on achievable goals to make Artesia the greatest city in New Mexico.
The next Minute with the Mayor will be on January 23 starting at 8:30am at Kith+Kin. Join us!

Jon Henry is the Mayor of Artesia, NM and serves as Eddy County Commissioner for District 2.
