The Artesia Police Department (APD) was engaged in an officer-involved shooting late Thursday evening that occurred after a man fired at police.

Cmdr. Pete Quinones reported early Friday that officers were attempting to stop an individual on a bicycle just after 9 p.m. Thursday in the area of South Seventh Street between West Missouri and West Dallas avenues. The male subject brandished a firearm and shot at police.

Law enforcement returned fire, striking the man, and he was subsequently taken into custody. No officers were injured during the incident.

The suspect sustained minor injuries and was provided with immediate medical care on scene before being transported to Artesia General Hospital for further treatment. Upon his release, he was taken to the Artesia Public Safety Complex for detention and further processing by the New Mexico State Police (NMSP).

The immediate area was roped off and remains closed to through traffic into Friday as law enforcement processes the scene.

Quinones said the officer-involved shooting is, as is standard procedure, being investigated by the NMSP. In accordance with APD policy, the involved officer has been placed on standard administrative leave while the investigation takes place.

The Daily Press has reached out to the NMSP for further information and will update as it becomes available.
