Over the years, October has become synonymous with breast cancer awareness in the form of pink ribbons, 5ks, honoring loved ones and mammogram education. As a mammogram technologist, I am dedicated 365 days a year to informing women about the importance of regular breast screenings, knowing their family history and early detection.
As we near the end of the month, I urge all of our community members who meet the annual mammogram criteria to please make your appointment today!
What to expect when getting a mammogram?
If your appointment is with Artesia General Hospital, there’s a good chance I’ll conduct your mammogram—I look forward to meeting you. We offer state-of-the-art 3D screening, which is proven to better detect more invasive breast cancers, provide more accurate results—leading to fewer callbacks—and is more comfortable for you.
Most of the people I care for are in and out of their appointments within 15 to 20 minutes. I understand screenings can be scary, which is why I always encourage patients to consider bringing a loved one along for support.

Who should get a mammogram?
Many women with breast cancer have no symptoms, which is why it’s critical to get regular screenings. Women with an average risk of developing breast cancer can begin screening at the age of 40.
Women who are at a high risk of developing breast cancer are usually recommended to begin annual mammograms at the age of 30. However, you should work with your physician to determine the best plan for you. High-risk factors include a family history of breast cancer, having a BRCA gene mutation and receiving chest radiation between the ages of 10 and 30.

Halie Estrada is the lead mammography technologist for Artesia General Hospital. She graduated from the Radiologic Technology program in 2016 and received her mammography registration in 2020. Prior to working in Artesia’s radiology department, she worked as a medical assistant and radiologic technologist in the hospital’s orthopedic department.
