ARTESIA — The Artesia Police Department is warning the community about a recent rash of attempted scams on the elderly.
“Although, luckily, the potential victims did not give any money away, the Artesia PD feels it necessary to publish a message concerning this type of behavior,” Sgt. Lindell Smith said in a release.
Smith indicated that, according to FBI Common Fraud Schemes, a senior citizen may be more vulnerable to schemes because of certain factors, such as: People who grew up in the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s were generally raised to be polite and trusting; senior citizens are more likely to have a “nest egg,” to own their home, and to have excellent credit; and older Americans are less likely to report a fraud because they don’t know whom to report it to, are too ashamed of being scammed, or are unaware that they have been scammed. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
