Artesians were feeling particularly wistful this morning as they passed by the 1500 block of Main Street on their way to work to see the old Tastee-Freez building coming down.

The Tastee-Freez, owned for decades by Ruth and Alton Bratcher, played a prominent role in the memories of many longtime residents. Following the dissolution of the franchise association, the eatery continued to operate for several years as Ruth’s Restaurant before later housing Alma’s Restaurant and Senor Tacos, among others.

The former property owners have announced in recent days that plans for the lot include the construction of a new HTeaO, a Texas-based chain that features primarily unique flavors of iced tea. HTeaO locations are already in operation in Carlsbad, Clovis and Hobbs, with a Roswell location coming soon.

Elsewhere, City of Artesia Infrastructure Director Byron Landfair has also confirmed that Schlotzsky’s and a second McDonald’s are currently in the permitting process with the city. The Schlotzsky’s will be located in the lot at 10th and Main streets. Additional details will be announced as they become available.
