An Artesia woman was shot and killed Saturday afternoon at a mobile home located just north of Artesia on North 13th Street.

At 3:56 p.m., an Eddy County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) deputy was dispatched to 221 N 13th Rural Street, in reference to shots fired. When authorities arrived on scene, they found 32-year-old Brandi Capps, who was suffering from a gunshot wound.

Artesia Emergency Medical Services treated and transported Capps to Artesia General Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Although three days have passed since the incident and the ECSO says it has identified a shooter, no arrests have been made in relation to the homicide. Authorities declined to name the suspect.

The ECSO Special Investigations Unit is at the helm of the ongoing investigation, which is proceeding with caution.

ECSO Captain Jeff Zuniga said the ECSO is closely scrutinizing the facts to ensure it files the correct charges and brings justice to the matter.

“If we charge (the suspect) with involuntary manslaughter (in an effort to detain him) he could plead guilty to the charge,” he said. “I don’t like to gamble like that.”

Zuniga said the full report on the incident is currently making its way through channels and will be made available in “a day or two.”

Anyone with information regarding this incident can contact the ECSO Special Investigations Unit at 575-746-9888.
