They were only a couple of months away from what they thought would be his last chemotherapy session when 8-year-old Mateo Morillon noticed another lump on his head. In a matter of moments, all of the Morillon’s struggles over the past several months would prove to be only the beginning of their struggle to get Mateo healthy.

“Everything was going well with his treatments and then at the end of October we found out the tumor was back,” Mateo’s dad, Marcos, said. “He started getting nausea and headaches again and we knew immediately what it was.”

Mateo began his battle against Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis early last year. Histiocytosis is a rare disease that is caused by the overproduction of a type of white cell that can lead to organ damage and the formation of tumors.
After his initial diagnosis, Mateo began receiving treatment at M.D. Anderson hospital in Houston. After several months of chemotherapy that they thought was helping heal him, they later found out it was not the case. “It’s like we have started all over,” Marcos said, “But we feel like we’re back on the right track now.”
