According to discussion at Monday night’s school board meeting, the state’s reduction in instructional materials funding has made it impossible for the Artesia Public Schools system to adopt new curriculum.
Dr. Crit Caton, assistant superintendent of curriculum for Artesia Public Schools, reported that, since 2008, there has been a 62-percent reduction in textbook allocation.
According to Caton, in the 2008-09 school year, the district was allowed $349,559, or approximately $100 per student, in funds for textbooks. The next year, funds were slightly higher. APS was given roughly $369,000, or $106 per student.
During the 2010-11 school year, Caton reported that only $141,947, or $39.32 per student, was given to the district by the state. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
