On Wednesday, Oct. 2, Mayor Phillip Burch met with Brooke Carnathan, RN, and Carol Holland, CNP, of Yucca Healthcare to bestow upon the community a proclamation that October of 2013 is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The proclamation states, “Whereas, October is recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and whereas, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States aside from skin cancer and is the second leading cause of cancer death in women-after lung cancer; and whereas, men too can fall victim to breast cancer; and whereas, signs of breast cancer are not the same for all people making it that much more important to have regular breast exams and screenings; and whereas, there are several different types and stages of breast cancer and determining these are the most important factor in choosing treatment options; and now, therefore, I, Phillip S. Burch, Mayor of the City of Artesia, do hereby proclaim October 2013 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Artesia, New Mexico, County of Eddy and urge our citizens to realize that if breast cancer is found early, the treatment options are expanded and the chances of survival increases.” … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
