The Eddy County Commission voted to approve a budget of $125,000 today for the renovation of Sunset Gardens Memorial Park in Carlsbad.

Sunset Gardens was the subject of scandal in 2005 when former owner Bill Crouch was convicted of disturbing a marked burial ground after allegedly removing cremated remains and keeping them after a dispute over payment. The cemetery was repossessed and auctioned when Crouch allegedly refused to pay fines resulting from the charges. The cemetery’s current owners want to raise the status of the grounds to that of a national cemetery and to gain recognition from the State of New Mexico as a veterans’ cemetery. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
