Commissioners got face-to-face with inmates during a tour of the Eddy County Detention Center Tuesday as one of their biannual visits mandated by the state.

Warden Robert Stewart led commissioners through the facilities, including the new Juvenile Detention Center being constructed across the street.

Commissioner Roxanne Lara explained it is a great opportunity to witness, first-hand, how the facility is operating and “ensure the administration keeps things in tip-top shape.”

“It’s good the commissioners get to see the facility, how it looks, how it’s running and that everything is up to their expectations,” Deputy Warden Shawn Funk said. “We try to show them the housing areas, the cleanliness of the facility and we make sure they see the facilities are in working order and there are no problems.
