The Artesia City Council voted Monday not to extend city employee benefits to the mayor and council members.
Council members are currently not afforded any benefits (medical, retirement) by the City of Artesia and draw a salary of $600 per month for their service. The mayor receives $800 per month.
Of the councilors present, two voted in favor of receiving benefits and four voted against.
“I serve not for the money and not for the benefits,” Mayor Pro Tem Terry Hill, who voted against the ordinance, said. “I would suggest that each of us have our own medical in place (before we are elected). Historically, councilors that have served are also employed and usually come carrying our own insurance.
