Deadly two-vehicle crash on Highway 285

(Eddy County, New Mexico) Chief Deputy Matthew Hutchinson reports on
Sunday, February 25, 2024, at approximately 0708 hours, the Eddy County
Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit responded to a two-vehicle crash on US Highway 285
and State Road 31 involving a passenger vehicle vs a Commercial Motor Vehicle
that occurred at approximately 0647 hours.
One of the drivers involved, identified as Anthony Javier Rivera, 20 years of
age, from Fabens, Texas, was pronounced deceased on the scene after life-saving
measures were attempted by Emergency Medical Services. Next of kin has been
notified. No other injuries were reported on scene. The intersection US 285 and
State Road 31 was closed to traffic in all directions for approximately three hours
while the Traffic Unit conducted their on-scene investigation.
A preliminary investigation has been completed on scene; however, the
incident is still being investigated by the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office Traffic
